VATICAN NEWS

Korean Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik is the new Prefect of the Clergy

Pope Francis accepts the resignation of Cardinal Beniamino Stella due to age limit. As has already happened with the Congregation for Worship, the change of leadership for the Dicastery that deals with priests will be preceded by an apostolic visit.

By Vatican News

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Beniamino Stella and appointed 69-year-old Lazarus You Heung-sik, bishop of Daejeon, Korea, as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. The new Prefect knows the Pope and welcomed him to his diocese during the Pope's trip to Korea in August 2014.

Born in 1951 and ordained a priest for the Diocese of Daejeon, Lazarus You Heung-sik became a coadjutor in the same diocese in 2003 and two years later assumed full responsibility. The new Prefect was the head of the Korean Bishops' Conference's Peace Committee and traveled to North Korea four times.

The appointment of a Korean bishop to the Congregation for the Clergy follows that of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle at the head of Propaganda Fide and testifies to Pope Francis' attention to the Asian continent.

In recent days, the bishop of Mondovi, Egidio Miragoli, wrote a letter to the clergy of his diocese to inform them that he had received from the Pontiff the task of "making a visit, on his behalf, to the Congregation for the Clergy," on the eve of the announcement of the change in the leadership of the Dicastery. The visit follows the one made by Archbishop Claudio Maniago to the Congregation for Divine Worship, after the acceptance of the resignation of Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah. It is very likely that this from now on will be the practice adopted by Pope Francis also for the other Dicasteries on the occasion of the turnover of the person in charge.

The appointment to the Clergy was long overdue: the current Prefect, Cardinal Beniamino Stella, is in fact about to turn eighty years old next August 18. An apostolic nuncio and then president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, Stella had been appointed to the Clergy in September 2013, a few months after the new Pope was elected.

Francis ruled that Cardinal Stella "remain in charge" of the Congregation "until the new Prefect takes office."

US Bishops kick off Spring meeting in virtual format

The Bishops of the United States are meeting virtually this week to discuss a range of issues from the canonization of two men to matters related to the liturgy.

By Vatican News staff writer

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) kicks off its Spring General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, held once again in a virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event opens with a speech by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and another from USCCB president Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles.

It runs until 18 June, and covers a range of topics relevant to the Church in the US.

Causes for Canonization

Around 280 Bishops are set to vote on 9 “action items”.

Topping the list, according to a statement on the USCCB website, is whether to advance the causes for canonization of two Servants of God.

Joseph Verbis Lefleur was a US military chaplain and prisoner-of-war during World War II. He was captured by Japanese forces while serving American troops in the Philippines, and was killed in 1944 when a US submarine sunk the Japanese ship aboard which he and 750 other US military personnel were being transported.

The other cause up for consideration is that of Marinus (Leonard) LaRue. He was a US Merchant Marine Captain who saved 14,000 Korean refugees in 1950, and later became a Benedictine religious brother. He died in 2001 at the age of 87 at St. Paul’s Abbey in New Jersey.

Liturgy and pastoral care

During their meeting, US Bishops will also vote on three liturgical translations and a “formal statement on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.”

Regarding pastoral care of the faithful, votes will be held on a guide for marriage and family ministry, a plan for a youth ministry pastoral framework, and a “comprehensive vision for Native American / Alaska Native Ministry”.

Immigration and catechesis

Other topics up for discussion include a report on the protection of minors, as well as updates on catechetical initiatives and immigration issues.

A study conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) will also be presented regarding pastoral care for migrants and refugees.

The Spring General Assembly will be broadcast online on the USCCB’s website.
